After failing to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Indian hockey team will kick off the new Olympic cycle looking to defend its continental title at the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 starting in Bihar from Monday.
All matches in the eighth edition of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy will be played at the newly-developed Rajgir Hockey Stadium. Live streaming and live telecast will be available in India.
The Indian women’s hockey team will be led by new captain Salima Tete, a 22-year-old midfielder known for speed and agility. Former captain Savita Punia is also in the squad and will share goalkeeping duties with youngster Bichu Devi Kharibam.
Salima Tete, who has over 100 international caps, will have forward Navneet Kaur as her deputy. Udita and Jyoti will anchor the defence in the women’s Asian Champions Trophy hockey competition.
This will also be India’s first major assignment under new coach Harendra Singh, who replaced Janneke Schopman after the Indian women’s hockey team failed to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
However, India’s quest for back-to-back titles will not be easy with the People’s Republic of China, who won silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand being the other five teams in the competition.
World No. 6 China are the best-ranked team in the women’s Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament followed by the Indian women’s hockey team at ninth.
China beat India 4-0 in the semi-finals en route to winning the Asian Games 2023 title in Hangzhou last year. The two teams will face off on Saturday.
Two-time champions Japan are at world No. 11. The Indian women’s team missed out on the Paris 2024 quota after losing 1-0 to Japan at the FIH Olympic Qualifiers in January in the bronze medal match.
South Korea, the most successful team in the competition with three titles, are world No. 15 and are followed by Malaysia (23rd) and Thailand (29th).
Indian women will open their campaign against Malaysia on Monday and will take on South Korea the following day.
The top four teams at the end of the Asian Champions Trophy league stage will qualify for the semi-finals.
India are hosting the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy for the second time. The previous edition was held in Ranchi last year. India defeated Japan in the final to win their second title and first since 2016.
