The Indian hockey team will face Malaysia in its opening match of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024, scheduled in Rajgir, Bihar, from November 11 to 20.
All matches in the eighth edition of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy will be played at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium.
The Indian women’s hockey team won the tournament back in 2016 and also reclaimed the title last year in Ranchi, beating Japan in the final.
This year’s Asian hockey championships will see six teams - the People’s Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Malaysia and Thailand - compete for the title.
All the teams will play each other in a round-robin format in the group stage and the top four teams will make the semi-finals.
India will face Malaysia in the first match on November 11 before facing Korea the next day.
China, gold medallists at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, are the top-ranked women’s hockey team in the competition at world No. 6 followed by India at ninth. Japan are 11th, South Korea 15th, Malaysia 23rd and Thailand are ranked 29th.
South Korea, with three titles, are the most successful team in the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy. Japan, like India, are two-time champions.
