Paris 2024: Who has already qualified for the next Olympic Games?

A total of 120 quota places for Paris 2024 were allocated in 2022. Discover the full list of quotas and what to expect in 2023 when the world will celebrate one year to go to the next Olympic Games.

Welcome to 2023, or in other words the year before the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

In some ways, Paris 2024 began in 2022, a year in which 120 quotas were allocated to NOCs in 11 different sports, with shooting the sport with the most spots already allocated for the next Olympic Games and another 13 sports beginning their qualification process that year.

As host country, France secured quotas to the Games in almost all sports, but the race to Paris 2024 is just getting started.

Olympic quotas allocated in 2022: sport by sport

In the information below, France's quotas as host country have only been added in the sports in which their secured spot affects the allocation of further quotas.

Handball (1)

  • Women: Norway, France (host)
  • Men: France (host)

The next Olympic qualifier is the men's World Championship (1 quota) which takes place from 12 to 29 January 2023 in Poland and Sweden

Artistic gymnastics (6)

  • Women's team (5 athletes per team): United States of America, Great Britain, Canada
  • Men's team (5 athletes per team): People's Republic of China, Japan, Great Britain

The next Olympic qualifier is the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships from 29 September to 8 October 2023 in Antwerp (Belgium)

Rhythmic gymnastics (6)

  • Individual qualification: Italy, Germany, Bulgaria
  • Group qualification (5 athletes per group): Bulgaria, Israel, Spain

The next Olympic qualifier is the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships from 23 August to 27 August in Valencia (ESP)

Olympic qualifiers that began in 2022: sport by sport

The qualification pathway for the following sports has already started but the direct quotas are yet to be allocated

  • Basketball 3x3

The Olympic qualification period via ranking began on 1 November 2022 and will end on 1 November 2023. The Olympic Qualifying Tournament will then give NOCs who haven't obtained a quota place another chance to qualify.

  • BMX Racing

The Olympic qualification period began on 1 August 2022 and will end 2 June 2024.

  • Mountain bike

The Olympic qualification period began on 7 May 2022 and will end on 26 May 2024.

  • Track Cycling

The Olympic qualification period began on 9 July 2022 and will end on 14 April 2024.

  • Road cycling

The Olympic qualification period began in October 2022 and will end 52 weeks after, in October 2023 (the exact date is to be defined).

  • BMX freestyle

The Olympic qualification period began on 1 November 2022 and will end on 2 June 2024.

  • Skateboarding

The Olympic qualification period began on 22 June 2022 and will end on 23 June 2024.

  • Judo

The Olympic qualification period began on 24 June 2022 and will end on 23 June 2024. After that date

  • Taekwondo

The Olympic qualification period via ranking will end the 22 December 2023. Continental Qualification Tournaments will then be organised. Only NOCs that have quotas for less than two athletes per gender through the WT Olympic Ranking or WT Grand Slam Champions Series will be eligible to participate in the Continental Qualification Tournaments.

  • Rugby 7s

The Olympic qualification period began with the 2022-2023 World Rugby Sevens World Series in November 2022. This event, the first in which NOCs can secure quotas for Paris 2024 in rugby 7s, will finish in May 2023.

  • Golf

The Olympic qualification period began on 17 June 2022 for men and 24 June 2022 for women and both will end on the same dates in 2024.

  • Weightlifting

The weightlifting Paris 2024 qualification period for the Olympic Qualification Ranking began on 1 August 2022 and concludes on 28 April 2024.

  • Athletics

The Olympic qualification period for marathon began on 1 November 2022 and will end on 30 April 2024.

The qualification period for all other athletics events will begin soon:

  • For the 10,000m, combined events, race walks and relays, the qualification and ranking period will be between 31 December 2022 and 30 June 2024
  • The ranking period for the rest of the individual events will be between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024.

Sports with Olympic qualification pathways starting in 2023

  • Beach Volleyball – 1st Jan 2023

In beach volleyball, the qualification pathway to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will start on 1 January 2023. From that day to 10 June 2024, results in the World Championships, Beach Pro Tour and recognised Continental Tours Finals will count for the FIVB Olympic Ranking that awards 17 quotas per gender.

  • Swimming – March 2023

In swimming, athletes need to achiee the Olympic Qualification Time (OQT) of their respective event if they want to ensure their participation at Paris 2024. Those standard entry times need to be reached in FINA designated competitions during the qualification period from 1 March 2023 to 23 June 2024.

  • Hockey – TBD

The first quotas allocated in hockey will be through continental qualifiers that will be held in 2023, in which the winners of each (one per gender) will earn one quota place each for their NOC. The first expected to be held is the Oceania Cup in April 2023, but this is still to be confirmed.

  • Fencing – April 2023

In fencing, the team qualification is based on the FIE Official senior Team Ranking list, which will be based on points accrued from 3 April 2023 to 1 April 2024 in three competitions (World Cup, World Championship and Continental Championships). For the individual qualification, the ranking expands upon the same timeline, with points gained in the Grand Prix, World Cup, satellite competitions, World Championships and Continental Championships counting.

  • Badminton – May 2023

In badminton, the Olympic quotas will be determined by the Paris Ranking Lists, which will be based on the results achieved between 1 May 2023 and 28 April 2024.

  • Boxing - May 2023

The Olympic qualification period lasts from 1 May 2023 to (and including) 31 May 2024, but the Continental Qualification Tournaments will be the first events with direct quotas to Paris 2024 on offer. The first one in the calendar is the European Games (21 June-2 July).

  • Artistic swimming – TBD in 2023

The Continental Championships are the first events to offer qualification to Paris 2024 in artistic swimming, but the dates are yet to be defined or approved in some regions. The first qualifying event could be the European Games (21 June-2 July 2023).

  • Archery – June 2023

The European Games, which will take place in Krakow (Poland) from 21 June to 2 July 2023, will be the first direct qualifier for the Paris 2024 Games in archery. Quota places will be on offer in both the individual and mixed team competitions.

  • Breaking – June 2023

The first confirmed event that will be an Olympic qualifier for the new Olympic sport of breaking are the European Games, to be held from the 21 June to the 2 July 2023, in which the best ranked B-boy and B-girl will obtain a direct quota*.

*The second-ranked athlete may obtain the quota depending on the results of the 2023 World Championship in September 2023.

  • Diving – July 2023

In diving, the FINA World Championships Fukuoka 2023 (14-30 July) will serve as Phase 1 of the Olympic Games Qualification process. In this event, the three highest placed teams (excluding France, as host country) and the 12 highest placed athletes in each individual event will secure one quota place for their NOC.

  • Marathon swimming – July 2023

A total of six quota places (three per gender) will be allocated at the 2023 FINA World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, on 14-30 July 2023. Spots at Paris 2024 will be awarded to the medallists in the 10km race.

  • Water polo – July 2023

In water polo, the first event that will serve as an Olympic qualifier is the 20th FINA World Championships in Japan, where the two highest-placed teams per gender will secure a quota place for their respective NOCs.

  • Sport Climbing – Aug 2023

In sport climbing, the first Olympic Qualifier event will be the World Championships in Bern (Switzerland) in August 2023. Four quotas (two per gender) will be awarded in speed, while six quotas (three per gender) will be allocated in the combined boulder and lead event.

  • Tennis – August 2023

The vast majority of the tennis players to qualify for Paris 2024 will be determined by the ATP and WTA rankings in 2024, but there are some singles quotas called 'ITF Places' on offer for the winners or finalists of continental competitions in the Americas (2023 Pan-American Games), Asia (2022 Asian Games, in 2023) and Africa (2023 African Games). The first of these events taking place will be the African Games (4-19 August 2023).

  • Sailing - August 2023

In sailing, the first Olympic Qualifier event will be the 2023 World Sailing Championships. This competition will be organised in The Hague from 10 August to 23 August 2023. 107 quotas places for Paris 2024 will be awarded there.

  • Canoe Sprint – Aug 2023

The initial distribution of the 162 athlete quota places (81 per gender) and the initial 74 boat quota places (37 per gender) will take place at the 2023 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, to be held between 23 and 27 August 2023.

  • Rowing - Sept 2023

A total of 336 athletes (168 men and 168 women) will earn a quota to the next Olympic Games through the first qualifying event in rowing - the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, that will take place between 3-10 September 2023.

  • Volleyball – Sept 2023

The first Olympic Qualification Tournament in volleyball will be the women's, to be held from 16 to 24 September 2023. The top two teams in the tournament will qualify for Paris 2024.

  • Wrestling - Sept 2023

The World Championships in 2023, to be held from 16 to 24 September 2023, will serve as the first qualifying event in wrestling. All male and female medallists in each weight category will obtain a quota place for their NOC.

  • Canoe Slalom – Sept 2023

The 2023 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships will serve as the first Paris 2024 qualifying event in canoe slalom. From 19 to 23 September 2023, 27 quota places will be on offer to NOCs in this world global qualification event.

  • Table tennis – TBC in 2023

The Continental Qualification Events for Teams and Mixed Doubles will be the first events in which table tennis quotas are on offer for Paris 2024, with exact dates still to be defined.

  • Trampoline (Gymnastics) – TBC in 2023

Three of the five events at the 2023 World Cup (yet to be defined) will serve as the first qualifier events for trampoline. In those events at the 2023 and 2024 World Cup, gymnasts can earn points that count towards the qualification ranking list.

  • Modern Pentathlon – TBD in 2023

Modern pentathlon quotas will be available in the UIPM 2023 World Cup Final, the Continental Championships and the UIPM 2023 Pentathlon World Championships, the dates of which are yet to be defined.
