A huge clash awaits both Sweden and the USA on Sunday 5 August, as the two go head-to-head in the Round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
Over the years, this fixture has developed into one of the most enthralling encounters on the international football stage and generally delivers on every occasion.
From friendlies to important fixtures, there is scarcely love lost between these two nations.
Sunday is the first time they will go toe-to-toe in the knockout rounds of the competition, having previously met six times in the group stages.
Ahead of the blockbuster showpiece, we’re taking a look back on the shared history between two sides vying for World Cup glory.
Sweden v USA 2023: Who won the last time these two met?
The last encounter between these two nations came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, held in 2021.
Yet another group stage meeting for the pair, it was the first meeting of Group G with the Swedes reigning supreme in a thumping 3-0 victory.
Stina Blackstenius’ double set them on their way before Lina Hurtig sealed the win, with the USA unable to match them over the 90 minutes.
It set the precedent for what would be a disappointing Games by the standards of the Americans, going on to win bronze after being knocked out by Canada in the semi-final.
Sweden v USA 2023: USA holds the upper hand
Sunday will mark the 43rd meeting between these two teams – the USA have only played Canada, the People's Republic of China, and Norway on more occasions.
Since 1987, the Americans hold the upper hand in the head-to-head record, winning 23 of the 43 meetings.
Sweden boasts just seven wins, while they have gone on to contest 12 draws.
In recent meetings, the USA continues to hold superiority over their Scandinavian counterparts, though games are increasingly tighter.
The USWNT have won four of the last 10, losing two and drawing four, with nine of the last 10 decided by two goals or fewer.
Sweden v USA at the FIFA Women’s World Cup
Sunday is the seventh meeting at the FIFA Women’s World Cup – the first, however, to come in the knockout stages.
1991 was the first time they locked horns on the world stage, and since 2003, have met in the group stages of every tournament making the upcoming clash seemingly inevitable.
Vlatko Andonovski’s side will be enthused that they have won four of those games, but more recent fixtures look favourably on Sweden who beat them in 2011 and held the USA to a draw in 2015.
- 1991: Sweden 2-3 United States
- 2003: United States 3-1 Sweden
- 2007: Sweden 0-2 United States
- 2011: Sweden 2-1 United States
- 2015: United States 0-0 Sweden
- 2019: Sweden 0-2 United States
