Reigning world champions United States were bidding for a third consecutive world title at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand - but it was not meant to be.
Led by coach Vlatko Andonovski and the joint captaincy of Alex Morgan and Lindsey Horan, the side are fancied to go far in the tournament despite a period of transition within the setup.
In their opening game of Group E, the USWNT overcame debutants Vietnam 3-0 with Sophia Smith scoring two first-half goals before co-captain Horan bagged the third.
The Americans were held to a 1-1 draw by the Netherlands, before failing to score in a 0-0 encounter with Portugal.
Despite a disappointing end to their group stage, Andonovski's side still progressed to the Round of 16, where a hard-fought clash with Sweden was decided by a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
Sweden eventually won 5-4 on penalties, sending the USWNT home. It became the USWNT earliest ever exit from a Women's World Cup.
