Lindsey Horan and Alex Morgan have been named US Women’s national team captains for the 2023 Women’s World Cup kicking off on 20 July.

Both players were selected to take up the role after long-time captain Becky Sauerbrunn was sidelined from the football tournament in Australia and New Zealand due to injury.

“We have a lot of leaders on this team among the young players and the veteran players, and among those, Lindsey and Alex have vast experience in big games, and they understand what it takes to win at the highest levels,” head coach Vlatko Andonovski said in a statement.

“They are ultimate professionals and understand all the factors that go into having a united and motivated team. I know they will represent us well on and off the field at the World Cup.”

34-year-old Morgan of the San Diego Wave will be playing in her fourth World Cup and is the USWNT’s active leading scorer with 121 goals in 206 appearances. She has previously served as captain 22 times.

When they are on the field at the same time, U.S. Soccer confirmed that Horan will wear the armband.

Both players were part of the winning 2019 Women’s World Cup squad and will be targeting a 'three-peat' of world titles when the tournament in Australia and New Zealand gets underway.
