The Tokyo Olympics women’s singles semi-finals will be played on Thursday followed by the bronze and gold medal matches later on the same day at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Top-seeded Meng Chen of China will face No. 26 seed Mengyu Yu of Singapore in the first semi-final. Yu upset No. 4 seed Cheng I Ching of Chinese Taipei in the third round and No. 5 seed Kasumi Ishikawa of Japan in the quarter-finals.
In the other semi-final, No. 2 seed Yingsha Sun of China will clash with No. 3 seed Mima Ito of Japan. Ito has already won the mixed doubles gold at the Tokyo Olympics along with Jun Mizutani, beating the No. 1 seeds Xin Xu and Shiwen Liu of China in the final.
The winners of the women’s singles semi-finals will progress to play the gold medal match, while the losers will contest the Tokyo 2020 bronze medal match.
India fielded two table tennis players in the women’s singles but both were knocked out early. Manika Batra fell in straight games to Sofia Polcanova in the third round and Sutirtha Mukherjee lost to veteran Fu Yu in the second.
