Biography

For someone who took up table tennis as a means to shed some extra pounds during her school days, Sutirtha Mukherjee’s rise through the Indian table tennis ranks has been impressive.

Sutirtha Mukherjee hit a new career-high when she beat India No. 1 Manika Batra in the Asian qualifiers to make it to her maiden Olympics at Tokyo 2020.

In her debut Olympics outing, Sutirtha Mukherjee came from two games down to beat higher-ranked Swede Linda Bergstrom 4-3 to start off with a win in the opening round.

Sutirtha Mukherjee bowed out after a 4-0 loss to Portuguese veteran Fu Yu in the second round. However, she had fulfilled a lifelong dream of playing in the Olympics and completed a remarkable turnaround in her career after a crushing ban a few years earlier.

Born on October 10, 1995, in Naihati -- a small town in West Bengal -- Sutirtha Mukherjee was making a name for herself in the junior divisions before she was slapped with a two-year ban in 2015 for alleged age fraud.

While the ban devastated the Indian table tennis player, Sutirtha Mukherjee continued her grind away from the competitive circuit, preparing for her eventual return.
