Fouaad Mirza will become the first Indian equestrian to compete at the Olympics in 21 years when he rides out at the Baji Koen Equestrian Park on Friday.
The 29-year-old Indian from Bengaluru will be competing in the individual eventing section at the Tokyo Olympics atop Seigneur Medicott – the same horse Fouaad rode to win two Asian Games silver medals in 2018.
Just like a triathlon, in eventing, riders must complete three rounds – dressage, cross country and jumping.
The dressage test involves a prearranged routine to be performed by the horse. The quality of trot, regularity of steps, balance and the harmony between athlete and horse are some of the factors used to judge dressage.
The cross country test involves riding the horse through an outdoor course involving hurdles such as wooden logs, trees, water and ditches whereas the jumping test requires horses to jump over varying obstacles.
Penalties are handed for a failed obstacle. So, the rider with the least number of penalty points tops the table.
The top 25 athletes after combining the scores of dressage, cross country and jumping move ahead to jumping round 2, which determines the medal winners.
Both men and women compete together on equal terms in equestrian.
Michael Jung, who has won gold medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016, will be the favourite to win a hat-trick of eventing golds.
