Iran’s Hassan Yazdani and David Morris Taylor of the USA will go up against each other for the men’s 86kg freestyle wrestling gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Thursday.
It is a battle of the world champions at the Makuhari Messe - Hassan Yazdani is a two-time champion (2017 and 2019) while David Morris Taylor became champion in 2018.
Incidentally, the American wrestler had beaten Hassan Yazdani in the first round enroute the world championship title in 2018
Hassan Yazdani also has an Olympic gold medal - he won the 74kg category title at Rio 2016 before switching to the 86kg in 2017. The Iranian is the top seed at Tokyo 2020.
David Morris Taylor, nicknamed the Magic Man, is a three-time Pan American champion.
The American wrestler had beaten India’s Deepak Punia, the world No. 2, in the semi-finals by technical superiority.
Deepak Punia still has another shot at a medal through the repechage round on Thursday - where he will either face third seed Myles Amine of San Marino or Belarus’ Ali Shabanu for the bronze medal.
The Hassan Yazdani vs David Taylor men’s 86kg freestyle wrestling gold medal bout is scheduled on Thursday, August 5. The final will start at about 4:40 PM Indian Standard Time (seventh bout on Mat B).
