India’s Ravi Kumar Dahiya will be up against world champion Zavur Uguev of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the gold medal match of the 57kg freestyle category at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya became India’s second wrestler to qualify for the final at the Olympics after he defeated Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Sushil Kumar is the first Indian wrestler to reach the final at the Olympics. He did so at the 2012 London Olympics, where he lost to Japan’s Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu and settled for a silver medal in the 66kg final.

Should he win the gold medal, Ravi Kumar Dahiya will become only the second individual Olympic champion after Abhinav Bindra.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya was in good form on the opening day at the Makuhari Messe in Tokyo. The 23-year-old Indian wrestler was tested in the semis by two-time world championships medallist Nurislam Sanayev.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya, however, turned a deficit of 9-2 in the last 10 seconds by pinning the Kazakh and made the final on his debut Olympics.

In the gold medal bout, the Indian wrestler will have to be on his toes against the reigning world champion Zavur Uguev, the second seed at Tokyo 2020.

Zavur Uguev’s only close match came in the quarter-finals against Uzbekistan’s Gulomjon Abdullaev, who lost out on criteria. (a set of rules that decides the winner of the match in case the wrestlers end up tied on points)

Ravi Kumar Dahiya last faced Zavur Uguev in the semi-finals of the 2019 world championships where the Indian wrestler lost out in the final seconds of the bout in a closely fought contest.
