Ravi Kumar Dahiya 'most complete' wrestler in Indian contingent, says Olympian Rohtas Singh Dahiya
The Los Angeles 1984 Olympian believes Ravi has the capability to turn around a bout from any position.
Indian freestyle wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya pinned his Kazak opponent Nurislam Sanayev to stage a stunning comeback and win their men's 57kg category semi-final bout by 'fall' at Tokyo 2020 on Wednesday.
The win assured him of a silver medal at the very least and the 23-year-old is now the toast of the country.
Olympian Rohtas Singh Dahiya, who also took part in the men's 57kg event at Los Angeles 1984, believes that Ravi is the most complete wrestler in the Indian contingent and will go on to clinch gold.
"Ravi Kumar Dahiya is a talented wrestler. He can surely bring gold for the country. He is our world-class wrestler. His standing, ground, he is an all-round and complete wrestler. We have expectations from him to win only gold and no other medal," Dahiya told Olympics.com.
His opponent Sanayev, initially, grabbed his ankles and rolled him four times to accumulate eight points at one go. Rohtas believes it was an error in judgement from the Indian wrestler which led to leaking the points but he had the capability of turning things around at any point.
"Ravi (Kumar Dahiya) was initially thinking that he could take some time before opening the attack. He was saving his breath. It was his strategy to stay calm before grappling and taking on the opponent," Dahiya explained.
"Ravi gave all the points due to his own mistake. His mindset was not negative any point but he leaked at least eight points. But he has the ability to cover any lead and he did," he added.
Ravi, 23, will take on two-time World Champion Zaur Uguev of the ROC team in the final bout on Thursday. It can turn out to be a roughed-up clash between two champion wrestlers, Rohtas believes.
"I think the gold medal bout can be 50-50. It can be a really close bout and luck can be a major factor on the day. You can say it would be an exciting bout in the final against Uguev. This experience will help him in future," he said.
