Once Annu Rani steps onto the Olympic Stadium for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics women’s javelin throw event on August 3, Tuesday, she will become only the second Indian javelin thrower to compete at the Summer Games.
Gurmeet Kaur, at Sydney 2000, was the first female javelin thrower from India at the Olympics.
Annu Rani will be competing in a 30-woman field at Tokyo 2020. In the qualifying round, the competitors will be divided into two groups and each javelin thrower will get three attempts. The top 12 with the longest throws make it to the final.
In the medal round, after the first three throws the bottom four will get eliminated. The remaining eight will take three more throws. The one with the longest throw in the six attempts in the final wins gold. Second-best gets silver and third-best bags bronze.
Croatia’s Sara Kolak, the Rio 2016 gold medallist, will be returning to defend her crown while last edition’s bronze medallist, Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic, will be out looking for an upgrade.
Poland’s Maria Andrejczyk has the best throw this season, having breached 71.40m, and will be the in-form thrower to watch out for.
Reigning world champion Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia and the Chinese duo of Liu Shiying and Lu Huihui, who clinched silver and bronze, respectively, at the 2019 world championships in Doha, will also be top contenders for a podium finish.
