Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh will be shouldering India’s hopes once the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men’s javelin throw event gets underway at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday, August 4,

Both Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh are set for their Olympics debut.

A former IAAF U20 champion, the 23-year-old Neeraj Chopra, in recent years, has emerged as one of India’s biggest track and field superstars and has been rewriting his own national records at will.

The youngster has been in superb form in the lead up to Tokyo 2020, winning multiple medals in India and during his tour to Europe.

Neeraj Chopra also holds the fourth-best men’s javelin throw distance (88.07m) for the season, after Germany’s Johannes Vetter, Poland’s Marcin Krukowski and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott.

Shivpal Singh’s best throw for the season, meanwhile, is 81.63m.

Though the Tokyo 2020 men’s javelin throw field has been slightly weakened with Estonia’s Magnus Kirt, the 2019 world championships silver medallist, pulling out due to an injury, the 32-man field features plenty of big names.

Johannes Vetter, the 2017 world champion and 2019 world bronze medallist, has been consistently breaching the 90m mark this season and will be one of the favourites for the gold medal.

Keshorn Walcott, gold medallist at London 2012 and bronze medallist at Rio 2016, has the experience of winning it on the biggest stage and so does Kenya’s Julius Yego, who shot into fame after learning the sport through YouTube and winning the silver at Rio.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters, the reigning world champion, and Krukowski, the reigning European champion, will also be very much in fray.

The Tokyo 2020 men’s javelin throw event will be a two-stage affair. The qualifying stage will see the throwers divided into two groups and attempt three throws each. The top 12 advance to the final.

All 12 finalists get an initial round of three throws in the finals. The eight best throwers will then get another round of three.

The javelin thrower with the longest throw in his six attempts in the final, wins the gold medal. The second and third best thrower gets silver and bronze, respectively.
