Tokyo Olympics, badminton, Watch Tai Tzu-Ying vs Chen Yu Fei live in India
Tai Tzu-Ying enjoys a 15-3 head-to-head record against Chen Yu Fei. Watch the Tokyo 2020 women’s singles badminton gold medal match live.
Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-Ying faces off against China’s Chen Yu Fei in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics women’s singles gold medal match at the Musashino Forest Plaza on Sunday.
Tai Tzu-Ying is the world No. 1 and second seed at Tokyo while Chen Yu Fei is the current world No. 2 in the BWF women’s singles ranking and the top seed at this year’s Summer Games.
The 27-year-old Tai Tzu-Ying will go into the gold medal match as the more experienced campaigner while Chen Yu Fei, 23, is an emerging star and playing in her maiden Olympics.
One of the most consistent performers in women’s badminton over the past few years, Tai Tzu-ying boasts an incredible win-loss record and won over 25 BWF titles, including three All England Opens (2017, 2018 and 2020) in her career till date.
However, when it comes to the big two – the BWF world championships and the Olympics – the Chinese Taipei badminton player has always come up short. She will be desperate to change at least one of these records this Sunday.
In her Olympics ventures, Tai Tzu-ying was ousted in the round of 16 at London 2012 by eventual champion Li Xuerui. At Rio 2016, she fell to eventual silver medallist PV Sindhu in the same stage.
The two-time Asian champion, however, has been in sensational form heading into Tokyo. Since 2020, Tai Tzu-Ying has made it to the final of all six tournaments she has participated in, including the Olympics.
The Chinese Taipei player won two of them - the 2020 All England Open after beating Chen Yu Fei in the final and the World Tour Finals back in January, beating former Olympic champion Carolina Marin in the decider.
She has continued in the same vein at Tokyo, winning all three of her group matches before ousting Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the quarter-finals and PV Sindhu in the semi-finals.
Chen Yu Fei’s resume, doesn’t quite measure up to Tai Tzu-Ying’s yet but the young Chinese shuttler won’t be a pushover by any means.
The 2019 All England Open champion has proved her worth at the highest stage in the past four years and is perfectly capable of giving Tai Tzu-Ying a run for her money in Sunday’s final.
At Tokyo 2020, Chen Yu Fei won all her group matches before beating South Korea’s AN Seyoung, the world No. 8, in the quarter-finals and her Chinese compatriot HE Bing Jiao, the world No. 9, in the semis to earn her title shot.
Tai Tzu-Ying vs Chen Yu Fei head-to-head record
Tai Tzu-Ying enjoys an overwhelming 15-3 record against Chen Yu Fei in the two’s past meetings.
However, it’s to be noted that all three of Chen Yu Fei’s wins came in tournament finals – the 2019 All England Open, the 2019 BWF World Tour Finals and most recently, the 2020 Malaysia Masters.
