The moment India’s MP Jabir lines at the Olympic Stadium for the Tokyo 2020 men’s 400m hurdles heats on Friday, July 30, he will be creating a slice of history.
MP Jabir will be the first Indian male athlete to compete in 400m hurdles at the Olympics. PT Usha was India’s first 400m hurdler. Usha missing the bronze medal by one-hundredth of a second at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics is part of Indian athletics folklore.
The 25-year-old Kerala hurdler has been drawn in heat 5 in round 1 alongside South Africa’s Sokwakhana Zazini, Czech Republic’s Vit Muller, Estonia’s Rasmus Magi, USA’s world No. 2 Rai Benjamin, Netherlands’ Nick Smidt and Japan’s Takatoshi Abe.
First four from each heat and the next four fastest across all the five heats advance to the semi-finals. Top eight from the semis advance to the final, which decides the medals.
World record holder Karsten Warholm of Norway, Rai Benjamin and Brazil’s Alison dos Santos will be the top medal contenders in the event.
