One of the most anticipated athletics events at the Summer Games, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics women’s 100m sprint starts at the Olympic Stadium on Friday, July 30. Indian fans will have keen interest in the event since Dutee Chand is competing.

Dutee Chand also qualified in women’s 100m at Rio 2016 but exited after failing to get past the opening heats.

The women’s 100m begins with a total of 72 sprinters but only eight will make it to the final which decides the medals.

The preliminary heats, involving 27 athletes who made the cut through universality quotas, will be the first stage of the competition. Ten will progress from the preliminaries to join the rest of the competitors in the Round 1 heats. Dutee Chand starts directly from Round 1 heats.

There will be two stages of eliminations – Round 1 heats and semi-finals – before the final eight is decided for the final.

Some of the big names to look out for in the event will be Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won gold medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 before bagging bronze at Rio 206, her Jamaican team-mate Elaine Thompson Herah, the Rio champion, and British sprint sensation Dina Asher-Smith.
