Canadian Summer McIntosh set another world record Thursday (12 December) as she claimed the women's 200m butterfly title at the 2024 World Aquatics Short Course Swimming World Championships (25m) in Budapest, Hungary.
The 18-year-old superstar swam a 1:59.32 to clinch the top spot on the podium. It's McIntosh's second world record and second gold medal of the championships; she lowered the 400m freestyle record on Tuesday (10 December).
That record time put her more than a second-and-a-half ahead of American Regan Smith (2:01.00), who took silver. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia rounded out the podium at 2:02.91.
American Gretchen Walsh continued her winning ways, picking up her third gold medal of the event in the 100m freestyle final. She swam 50.31, an American and Championship record. France's Beryl Gastaldello (50.63) and Team USA's Kate Douglass (50.73) took silver and bronze, respectively.
Walsh also set the world record in the women's 100m IM, swimming a 55.71 in the semifinals. Earlier in Budapest, Walsh lowered the 50m butterfly world record twice.
The People's Republic of China claimed two gold medals Thursday with Tang Qianting (1:02.38) earning the women's 100m breaststroke title, while Qin Haiyang (55.47) was the men's 100m breaststroke winner.
In the men's 100m freestyle final, Jack Alexy of the United States won gold, clocking in at 45.38. Canada's Ilya Kharun was the men's 200m butterfly champion at 1:48.24.
Australia's Elijah Winnington won the men's 400m free final with a time of 3:35.89.
Competition wrapped up with the women's 4x200m freestyle relay. Team USA set another world record time (7:30.13) for the win.
Friday's (13 December) competition in Budapest will see medals awarded in nine finals.
