Skateboarders, are you ready?

The time has come for the next step on the road to Paris 2024: the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS).

From 16-19 May, the top 44 men’s and women’s skaters across the street and park disciplines are heading to Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, as they continue their quest to secure a quota* for the upcoming Games.

Until now, skaters have been competing in phase one of qualification, which has entailed participating in contests across the world.

At the end of that phase, the field was cut with just the top 44 invited to the second phase: OQS.

As Paris fast approaches the excitement levels have been raised - and so too have the stakes.

The points on offer at OQS - a two-part qualifying series - will be worth much more than what was previously offered in phase one meaning no one in their current ranking is safe.

Skaters will have their points from part one, with their points from Shanghai and Budapest (the second stop for OQS) combined to form an official ranking from which the final field for Paris 2024 will be decided.

In all, 22 skaters will compete in Paris: 20 will be qualified through the World Skateboarding Rankings, one universality quota place and one host country will be allocated to the highest-ranked host country athletes in each event, if not already otherwise qualified. A maximum number of three athletes per National Olympic Committee (NOC) per event will also be imposed.

For more information see here.

*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

OQS Shanghai 2024: Meet the street skaters

Nyjah Huston, Horigome Yuto, Rayssa Leal: there will be no shortage of street star power at the Huangpu River waterfront when the OQS begins.

But even the best in the business won’t be safe once the contest gets underway.

Since qualification for Paris began there have been noticeable shifts in the skateboarding world order.

Skaters that missed their chance to shoot their shot in Tokyo - like world champions Aurelien Giraud and Shirai Sora - have come back with a vengeance, and have laid down markers of intent in the build-up to Paris.

Then there are the newcomers that have emerged like Oda Yumeka, Chloe Covell, Akama Liz and Onodera Ginwoo, who have lit up Olympic qualifying contests seemingly out of nowhere.

Success at OQS to secure an Olympic quota spot will require strategy, a cool head and undoubtedly a dash of luck.

And for those from countries with skateboarding pedigree, the battle won’t just be with the rest of the world, but within their own ranks as well with just three members from the same NOC able to compete in one event at the Games.

OQS Shanghai 2024: Meet the park skaters

Just like street, the park scene post-Tokyo has seen many new names come along and shake up the status quo.

In the men’s field the United States and Brazil have continued to act as a conveyor belt of talent and their rising stars have been impressive until now.

Augusto Akio, Luigi Cini, Gavin Bottger and Tate Carew have all raised the bar throughout phase one and will be looking to keep pushing the establishment, including Olympic medallists Jagger Eaton, Pedro Barros and Keegan Palmer.

In the women’s field, the best from last time have improved with Tokyo 2020 Olympic medallists Sky Brown and Hiraki Cocona deepening their bag of tricks to stay out in front.

But the pressure coming upwards hasn’t relented. Australia has produced two new stars - one a world record breaker - who will be raring to try their luck. The United States similarly has good depth, Olympic gold medallist Yosozumi Sakura is in the mix, and who would dare to count out Naia Laso from Spain whose stocks continue to rise?
