Singapore Open 2023: Loh Kean Yew into second round to delight of home fans as Lee Zii Jia exits

Former world champion Loh wins men's singles opener in home BWF event to reach round of 16, but Malaysia's Lee loses epic.

Loh Kean Yew has made it safely through to the second round of the Singapore Open 2023 badminton tournament, to the delight of home fans.

The fourth seed beat Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong, China, in their opening men's singles encounter on Wednesday (7 June), to set up a meeting with Christo Popov of France, who beat Israel's Misha Zilberman.

Meanwhlie world number ten Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia was dumped out of the tournament with a three-set loss to Weng Hong Yang. The unseeded Chinese player won 22-20, 16-21, 21-19.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, world number two Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia progressed to the last 16 by beating Ng Ka Long Angus, 21-15, 24-22.

The Singapore Open is a Super 750 event on the 2023 BWF World Tour, with players able to earn ranking points which count towards Paris 2024 qualification. Viewers in some territories can watch the action on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com here.
