Indonesia’s badminton star Jonatan Christie is out of the Singapore Open 2023 after losing in the opening round 21-19, 21-12 to Shi Yu Qi (People's Republic of China) on Tuesday (6 June).
Christie, who clinched the Indonesia Masters earlier in January, was hoping to win his second title of the season but Shi proved to be too strong for the 2018 Asian Games winner.
After trailing 7-11 at the break, Christie managed to get back to 16-16 before Shi closed out the first game.
The encounter was more lopsided in the second game that Shi took 21-12.
In women’s singles Spain’s Carolina Marin defeated Line Kjaersfeldt of Denmark 16-21, 21-17, 21-12 to adavance to round two while world number one Yamaguchi Akane ousted Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist PV Sindhu.
