India at Paris 2024 Olympics, Day 2, as it happened: Manu Bhaker’s medal the headline act as PV Sindhu, Nikhat Zareen start campaign
India opened their medal tally at the Paris 2024 Olympics as shooter Manu Bhaker bounced back from the disappointment of Tokyo 2020 to win the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event on Sunday.
The former Youth Olympics champion became the first Indian woman to win a shooting medal at the Summer Games.
Shooters Ramita Jindal (women’s 10m air rifle) and Arjun Babuta (men’s 10m air rifle) also made their respective finals.
Two-time medallist PV Sindhu and H.S. Prannoy, meanwhile, opened their badminton singles campaigns with a victory.
Boxer Nikhat Zareen won her opening bout on her Olympic debut and advanced to the women’s 50kg round of 16, where she faces reigning 52kg world champion Wu Yu.
Four table tennis players were in action today. While Sreeja Akula and Manika Batra stormed into the women’s singles round of 32, Sharath Kamal and Harmeet Desai were ousted in the men’s singles.
Rower Balraj Panwar, notably, made the quarter-finals of the men’s single sculls event.
India’s tennis and swimming campaigns ended on Sunday.
Rohan Bopanna-N Sriram Balaji in men’s doubles and Sumit Nagal in men’s singles were knocked out after losing their first round matches. Srihari Nataraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu crashed out in their respective swimming heats.
Tennis: Bopanna-Sriram Balaji ousted in men's doubles event
India's Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji lost 7-5, 6-2 after one hour and 16 minutes in their tennis men's doubles first round match against French pair Gael Monfils and Edouard Roger-Vasselin at Paris 2024.
Monfils and Roger-Vasselin converted two of their three break point opportunities, enabling them to take a hard-fought first set. The Indian pair, meanwhile, made 15 unforced errors, five more than their French counterparts.
In the second set, the French pair broke Bopanna and Sriram Balaji's serve in the fourth and eighth games to seal a straightforward victory.
Badminton: Lakshya Sen's result vs Kevin Cordon deleted
Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen had won his men's singles Group L match against Guatemala's Kevin Cordon in straight games on Saturday.
However, on Sunday, Cordon pulled out of the Paris 2024 Olympics due to a left elbow injury, the BWF announced. As a result, Cordon's remaining Group L matches against Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie and Julien Carraggi of Belgium will not be played.
Meanwhile, the result of the Lakshya Sen vs Kevin Cordon match has also been deleted as per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, meaning the Indian badminton player will be ranked on the results of his two remaining games only.
The 22-year-old Sen will play Carraggi on July 29 at 5:30 PM IST.
"Living my dream" - HS Prannoy
India's HS Prannoy beat German shuttler Fabian Roth in straight games in his badminton men’s singles Group K match at Porte de la Chapelle Arena on Sunday.
At Paris 2024, the Indian badminton player made his Olympic debut at the age of 32.
"It’s always been a dream to be out there representing India in the Olympics. I’m really lucky to be living this right now," stated Prannoy.
While the victory against his unseeded opponent was expected, Prannoy and Roth played out a tough first game before the 13th seed won a comfortable second.
"I’m really happy to start off with a win. I think the first game was pretty close, I was not finding the rhythm out there and he was playing well," Prannoy mentioned. "But after that I got a little bit more relaxed and things started to fall into place in the second game."
Table tennis: Harmeet Desai outclassed in men's singles clash
India's Harmeet Desai went down 11-8, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 against Felix LeBrun of France in the table tennis men's singles round of 64 match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
LeBrun, the home favourite and world No. 5, stormed to a victory in Sunday's match after just 28 minutes against the 86th-ranked Indian player.
The 31-year-old Desai, two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, had progressed to the main draw at Paris 2024 after beating Zaid Abo Yaman of Jordan in straight games in the preliminary round on Saturday.
Zhiying Zeng - Olympic debutant at 58
Table tennis player Zhiying Zeng, formerly of the People’s Republic of China, made her Olympic debut at Paris 2024 at the age of 58 on Saturday.
Now representing Chile, she lost in the women’s singles preliminary round to 46-year-old Mariana Sahakian of Lebanon.
“I felt so excited. I was so restless. During my warm-up, I couldn’t stand still, couldn’t sit still. There was a little fear and nerves knowing how big this event is,” said Zeng.
"Of course, I wanted to win. But I don't feel very sad, because this is sport.”
Zhiying Zeng restarted playing professional table tennis during the COVID-19 lockdown, post a decades-long break. Over 40 years ago, she was a part of China's national team.
Despite her early exit in Paris, Zeng plans to remain active in future tournaments.
"As long as my body is not injured, I’ll still play. Even if I can’t play at this level, I can still play at the Masters level," added Zeng. “As long as you’re happy, you can do it. This adds so much value and meaning to my life, so I’ll continue playing."
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to clash in second round
Spaniard Rafael Nadal beat Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the men's singles first round of the Paris 2024 Olympics tennis tournament.
The record 14-time French Open champion, as a result, will face 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in the second round. The Serbian had beaten Australia's Matthew Ebden 6-0, 6-1 in the first round on Saturday.
The iconic Nadal vs Djokovic rivalry first began in Paris in 2006. In the second round, the duo will clash in the same city for the 60th time with Djokovic leading the head-to-head battle 30-29. It will be their first match since the 2022 Roland Garros quarter-finals, where Nadal won in four sets.
Nadal has one Olympic men's singles tennis title - Beijing 2008 - to his name while Djokovic's best Summer Games result, a bronze, also came in the same edition.
From Cook Islands to Paris 2024, the Lanihei Connolly story
Lanihei Connolly, an 18-year-old swimmer from the Cook Islands, made her Olympics debut at Paris 2024 today. She clocked 1:10.45 in the women's 100m breaststroke heats to rank 32nd.
Interestingly, Connolly excelled in swimming despite her nation, Cook Islands, not having a single Olympic-sized or even a 25m swimming pool. Hence, she had to sail to New Zealand and Australia to realise her sporting ambitions.
Connolly won back-to-back national championships in the two categories in 2021 and 2022. At the 2023 Pacific Games, she won the 50m breaststroke gold and bagged a 100m breaststroke silver.
Her cousin Zachary Payne is also an Olympic swimmer, featuring in the men's 50m freestyle event at London 2012.
Badminton: HS Prannoy wins men's singles opener
Indian badminton player HS Prannoy beat Germany's Fabian Roth in straight games in the men's singles Group K match at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Sunday.
The 13th-seeded Prannoy won 21-18, 21-12 after 45 minutes in a hard-fought match. While the unseeded Roth had a three-point lead in the latter stages of the first game, Prannoy bounced back to take the lead. The Indian badminton player, meanwhile, led throughout the second game, asserting his dominance at La Chapelle Arena.
The 32-year-old Prannoy will take on Vietnam's Le Duc Phat, ranked 71st in men's singles, in his final Group K fixture on Wednesday, July 31 at 11:00 PM IST.
South Sudan grab headlines in men's basketball
South Sudan, whose basketball federation was formed only 13 years ago, made their Olympic debut at Paris 2024 today.
The Bright Stars went on to beat Puerto Rico 90-79 in the men's basketball event to register their first Olympic win. Carlik Jones starred for South Sudan with 19 points.
The first-time Olympians will take on 16-time Olympic champions USA in their next match on August 1.
Inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, Manika Batra gears up for R32
Ace Indian table tennis player Manika Batra is competing at her third Olympic Games. After making her debut at Rio 2016, she became the first women’s table tennis player from India to make the round of 32 in singles at an Olympics.
At Paris 2024, Batra beat Great Britain's Anna Hursey 4-1 in the round of 64 to match her achievement from Tokyo. The 29-year-old Indian star will take on French player Prithika Pavade next.
"I just go match by match and point by point," stated Batra. "My next match is against Prithika. I've never played against her but I think I'm ready and I'll give 100% for my country, for myself and for my people."
Batra, meanwhile, takes inspiration from five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese men's footballer. Speaking on his influence on her game, Batra said, "I hope I meet him someday. Yes, he's definitely my inspiration. Whenever I go to a match, I watch his videos before going so it really inspires me. So yes, I hope I meet him."

Australia tops Paris 2024 medal tally
Australia have won five medals, three gold and two silver, at the Paris 2024 Olympics so far.
Road cyclist Grace Brown bagged gold, while swimmers also clinched two titles - Ariarne Titmus (women's 400m freestyle) and the Australian women's 4x100m freestyle relay team.
Swimmer Elijah Winnington (men's 400m freestyle) and the Australian men's 4x100m freestyle relay team, meanwhile, settled for silver.

Boxer Nikhat Zareen wary of "big challenge" Wu Yu in women's 50kg round of 16
On her Olympic debut, Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen won by unanimous decision against Maxi Carina Kloetzer of Germany in the women's 50kg round of 32 bout.
Zareen, as a result, will take the ring against reigning 52kg world champion and Asian Games gold medallist Wu Yu in the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday.
Considering the challenge in front of her, the two-time world champion Zareen said "She is the top seed. It’s a big challenge, but everyone is a challenge for me. I can’t take it easy on anyone. I can just better my performance in each bout."
“My Olympic strategy is to take each bout one at a time and my focus was always on this bout," added Zareen. "After waiting so long, after so much hard work and struggle, I am here at the Olympics representing my country."
Mary Kom, a bronze medallist in boxing at the London 2012 Olympic Games, is Zareen's inspiration. The 28-year-old pugilist, however, hopes to surpass her achievements and become the first Indian female to win an Olympic gold medal.
“Mary Kom is a legend. No one can better her record at the current time. I see her as my role model. She won bronze in London, so my focus will be to change the colour and make history in boxing,” stated Zareen.

Tennis: Sumit Nagal exits men's singles competition
Sumit Nagal, India's only tennis singles entry at the Paris 2024 Olympics, was knocked out in the first round by France's Corentin Moutet at Roland Garros on Sunday.
World No. 80 Nagal, who has featured in three Grand Slams in 2024, went down 6-2 in the first set but mounted a strong comeback to take the second set by the same scoreline. Moutet, ranked 68th in the ATP tennis rankings, however, held his nerve in a thrilling third set, winning it 7-5, to take the match after two hours and 28 minutes.
At Tokyo 2020, Nagal had made it to the second round at his maiden Olympic appearance.
The men's doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji will be in action later today against French pair Gael Monfils and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round.
Archery: India lose in women's team quarters
The Indian women's archery team - Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur and Deepika Kumari - went down 6-0 against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Sunday.
Seeded fourth, India scored only 51, 49 and 48 points in the three sets, making five 10s. While the Dutch team, headlined by Olympic medallist Gaby Schloesser, notched only three 10s in reply, they were consistently scoring 9s at Les Invalides.
Later, India will be represented in the men's team and mixed team archery at Paris 2024 while the individual events will also see the country's best in action.
"Surreal feeling" - Manu Bhaker after her historic medal
India's Manu Bhaker overcame her Tokyo 2020 disappointment and secured a historic podium at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

When asked about her emotions during the women's 10m air pistol final, Bhaker stated, “The entire final was nerve-racking, and I knew I had to pull myself together and not do anything I normally wouldn’t do. Just go with the flow, try my best and leave everything out there.”
India's first female shooting medallist, however, is hopeful that this is only the beginning of her Olympic success.
Table tennis: Manika Batra wins singles opener
Ace table tennis player Manika Batra won 4-1 against Great Britain's Anna Hursey in the round of 64 match of the women's singles event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 18th-seeded Indian star dispatched her unseeded opponent 11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5 after 41 minutes at the South Paris Arena on Sunday.
Batra, a Commonwealth Games champion, will go up against French player Prithika Pavade, seeded 12th, in the round of 32 clash. Earlier today, Batra's compatriot Sreeja Akula also advanced to the women's singles round of 32 in Paris.

Former Indian Olympians and athletes took to social media and celebrated Manu Bhaker's historic bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The former Youth Olympics champion is the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal and the fifth shooter overall from the country.
Beijing 2008 champion Abhinav Bindra expressed his emotions and congratulations on social media for the latest Indian shooting medallist.
Table tennis: Sharath Kamal knocked out in men's singles
Five-time Olympian Sharath Kamal lost 4-2 to unseeded Deni Kozul in the table tennis men's singles round of 64 match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Sharath Kamal, seeded 24th, won the first game 12-10, however, lost the next three games of the match. Despite mounting a comeback to take the sixth game by three points, the Slovakian player held his nerve to win the match in 53 minutes at the South Paris Arena on Sunday.
One of India's flag-bearers in the Opening Ceremony at Paris 2024, Sharath Kamal will be back in action with the Indian men's table tennis team on Saturday, August 5.
Boxing: Nikhat Zareen wins round of 32 bout
Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen made her Olympic debut in style at the Arena Paris Nord on Sunday, beating Germany's Maxi Carina Kloetzer by unanimous decision in the women's 50kg round of 32.
While Zareen, a two-time world champion, edged the first round 3:2, she scored perfect 10s in the second and third rounds.
Zareen will take on the People's Republic of China's Wu Yu, the top-seeded boxer in the category at Paris 2024, in the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday. Wu Yu is the reigning 52kg world champion and clinched the Asian Games title last year.
Shooting: Manu Bhaker creates history in Paris
With a score of 221.7, Indian shooter Manu Bhaker won the bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 22-year-old made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting. It also opened India's medal tally at Paris 2024.
Bhaker fought off the challenge of Trinh Thu Vinh (VIE) and Li Xue (CHN) to secure a podium finish at Paris 2024, three years after a pistol malfunction prematurely ended her campaign in Tokyo.
Manu Bhaker is also the first Indian shooter and first female athlete from the country to win a gold medal at the Youth Olympics from Buenos Aires 2018. She has previously won the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games titles too.
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (silver at Athens 2004), Abhinav Bindra (gold at Beijing 2008), Gagan Narang (bronze at London 2012) and Vijay Kumar (silver at London 2012) are the four previous Indian shooting medallists at the Olympics.
The Republic of Korea's shooters, meanwhile, finished 1-2 in the women's 10m air pistol final. Oh Ye Jin smashed the Olympic record with a score of 243.2, beating Vitalina Batsarashkina's tally of 240.3 from Tokyo 2020.
In the men's 10m air rifle qualification round, Arjun Babuta logged 630.1 to rank seventh and make the final. Sandeep Singh, the other Indian shooter at the event, however, finished 12th with 629.3.
Swimming: Srihari Nataraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu end campaign
Srihari Nataraj, one of India's two-member swimming team at Paris 2024, finished 33rd in the preliminary round of the men's 100m backstroke event, despite finishing second in his heat.
He clocked 55.01s, which was well short of the 53.93s time set by 16th-placed Jonny Marshall of Great Britain. Only the top 16 advanced to the semi-finals. No swimmer from heats 1, 2 and 3 met the qualification requirements.
Making her Olympic debut at 14, Dhinidhi Desinghu clocked 2:06.96 to finish 23rd in the women's 200m freestyle heats at the Paris La Defense Arena. Despite topping the charts in heat 1, the 200m freestyle national record holder fell well short of the top 16 mark.
Both Indian swimmers, as a result, ended their Paris 2024 Olympics campaign.
"Every match is important" - PV Sindhu after winning singles opener
Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu, earlier today, breezed past Maldives' Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq in the women's singles Group M match at Paris 2024.
"I’m happy. It was a good start. I was getting used to the court, getting used to the atmosphere. It’s been three years. Again, I’m back here," said Sindhu. "This is a very special one for me because 2016 was competitively very different, 2020 was different, and this is like a mixture of both"
PV Sindhu was training with Agus Dwi Santoso (INA) and Park Tae-Sang (KOR) ahead of the Paris Summer Games. Explaining their impact on her game, Sindhu stated, "I’ve been with Agus and PARK Tae-Sang for more than six months now. Everything has been coming together. I believe it’s important as a coach, as a team, to work together. Overall, it’s been pretty good. We’ve come so far and here it is, the Olympics."
A two-time Olympic medallist, playing for her third Olympic podium in a row, laid down the importance of her best preparation ahead of facing Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba on Wednesday.
Table tennis: Sreeja Akula triumphs in women's singles opener
India's Sreeja Akula stormed past Christina Kallberg of Sweden in the table tennis women's singles round of 64 match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 16th-seeded Akula won 11-4, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 against the world No. 58 Kallberg in 30 minutes at the South Paris Arena on Sunday. Akula will face Zeng Jian, seeded 31st, or world No. 73 Ivana Malobabic next in the round of 32.
Last month, Sreeja Akula achieved a career-best world No. 24 spot in table tennis rankings after winning the WTT Contender Lagos title. It was the joint-best singles ranking by an Indian table tennis player, joining Manika Batra (2024) and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran (2019).
Neha Aggarwal, a part of the Indian table tennis team at Beijing 2008, expressed her delight on social media after Akula's dominant performance.

Shooting: Ramita Jindal through to 10m air rifle final
Indian shooter Ramita Jindal finished fifth in the qualification round of the women's 10m air rifle event at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Sunday. With a score of 631.5, the 20-year-old advanced to the final. She shot above 104 in all six series of the qualification round.
Ramita is only the second Indian female shooter in 20 years to reach an Olympic final, following Manu Bhaker's achievement in the women’s 10m air pistol event on Saturday. Ramita won the bronze medal in this event at the Asian Games 2023. Suma Shirur, the last Indian woman to reach an Olympic rifle final, is Ramita’s coach.
Elavenil Valarivan, the other Indian shooter in the event, was ranked 10th with a score of 630.7 and missed out on a spot in the final. Only the top eight shooters will participate tomorrow at 1:00 PM IST.
The Republic of Korea's Ban Hyojin, meanwhile, shattered the women's 10m air rifle Olympic qualification record, scoring 634.5. Norwegian shooter Jeanette Hegg Duestad, who finished second on Sunday, previously held the record with a score of 632.9 at Tokyo 2020.
Rowing: Balraj Panwar advances to quarters
Balraj Panwar, India's lone rower at Paris 2024, made the men's single sculls quarter-finals on Sunday. The 25-year-old Army man finished second in repechage 2, clocking 7:12.41, behind Monaco's Quentin Antognelli. The other three participants in his repechage group advanced to the semifinal E/F.
On his Olympic debut, Panwar will race in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, July 30 at 1:40 PM IST.
He will have a chance to register India's best finish in any Olympic rowing event. The record currently belongs to the men’s lightweight double sculls duo of Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh who finished 11th in their event at Tokyo 2020.
Panwar had finished fourth in Final A at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China last year.
Badminton: PV Sindhu wins women's singles opener
Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu, seeded 10th, beat world No. 111 Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq 21-9, 21-6 after 29 minutes in her women's singles Group M opener at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The two-time Olympic medallist scored 14 points on her service in the first game while notching 18 in the second. It was Sindhu's second win in as many matches against her Maldives-based opponent, following the victory in straight games at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The 29-year-old Sindhu will face Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba (world No. 73) in her final Group M match on Wednesday, July 31 at 12:50 PM.

Ramita Jindal, PV Sindhu in early action on Day 2
Indian shooters Ramita Jindal and Elavenil Valarivan will take aim in the qualification round of the women’s 10m air rifle event at Paris 2024, scheduled at 12:45 PM IST. A top eight finish would see them challenge for a podium finish on Monday.
PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, begins her badminton women’s singles campaign today at 12:50 PM IST. A third consecutive Olympic medal is on the cards for the 29-year-old.

Neeraj Chopra to join Indian contingent in Paris
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic and world champion javelin thrower, is expected to join the Indian team at the Olympic Village today. Chopra, 26, will throw for his second medal at the Olympics on August 6 (qualifiers) and 8 (final) at the Stade de France.
