Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu will feature in the women’s singles badminton tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena from Sunday, July 28.

A former world and Commonwealth Games champion, Sindhu has firmly established herself as one of the top women’s singles players in Indian badminton history. The highlight of her illustrious career, however, has been her two Olympic medals.

At Paris 2024, Sindhu will take centrestage in her third Olympics. The Indian badminton player has never returned empty-handed from the Summer Games, having claimed silver at her debut Games at Rio 2016 before clinching bronze at Tokyo 2020.

She is the only Indian woman to have won multiple Olympic medals. Wrestler Sushil Kumar is the only other Indian with more than one individual Olympic medal in their cabinet.

Sindhu, currently 13th in the badminton world rankings, will compete in the women’s singles event at Paris 2024 and has been drawn in Group M as the 10th seed. Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba (world No. 73) and Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq (world No. 111) of Maldives are the other two players in her group.

  • Group M: PV Sindhu, Kristin Kuuba (Estonia), Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq (Maldives)

Sindhu is set to face Razzaq in her opening match on July 28 before taking on Kuuba.

While the 29-year-old Sindhu has never faced Kuuba before, the Indian shuttler came out on top the only time she met Fathimath. It was a straightforward 21-4, 21-11 win in the second round of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

Sindhu needs to top her group to make the round of 16, where she could potentially face the People’s Republic of China’s He Bingjiao, a Youth Olympics champion. Incidentally, Sindhu beat He Bingjiao to secure her bronze in Tokyo.

A quarter-final clash against reigning Olympic champion Chen Yufei could also be on the cards for the Indian.

Reigning world champion An Se-young (Group A) of the Republic of Korea is the top-seeded women’s singles player at Paris 2024. Chen Yufei (Group P) is seeded second while Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Tai Tzu-ying (Group E) is third.

Three-time world champion Carolina Marin, featuring in Group L, is seeded fourth and Group C favourite Akane Yamaguchi completes the top five.

Badminton at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be held at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena between July 27 and August 5.
