Baseball/softball will be contested at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, although somewhat weirdly, none of the three medallist teams from 2019 will be taking part in the men's baseball tournament.
While no current Major League Baseball (MLB) players are expected to compete in the baseball tournament, the softball one will be packed with top stars from Canada and the USA.
Read on to find out the key teams to watch.
Teams to watch in baseball/softball at the 2023 Pan American Games
The top three baseball teams from 2019 – Puerto Rico, Canada, and Nicaragua – all missed out on qualifying for the 2023 edition. That leaves quite an open field, though one likely to still be dominated by the bigger baseball countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, or Cuba rather than, say, hosts Chile.
With Major Leaguers not allowed to be selected, it will be the countries with the strongest domestic leagues that come to the fore, with those four leading the way.
It's a different matter in softball, with many top players in action. All three medalling teams from 2019 – USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico – return, with them their best rosters. The Americans have in particular selected many players from their Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medal and 2022 World Games gold-winning squads, among them Ally Carda. It is hard to look past those three teams to make the podium again, just as they did in 2015 and 2019.
