Arisa Trew held off Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Hiraki Kokona to win the women’s park skateboarding final at the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) Shanghai on Sunday (19 May).

Fourteen-year-old Trew’s second run of 91.16 gave the Australian her first podium of the Paris 2024 qualifying race and the win over Hiraki (90.18), who was the only one in the field with two 90-plus runs.

"I'm just really happy with how I went each day and I'm really happy with the result I got today," a beaming Trew shared after.

“I guess my secret is just to try my best, to have fun and then just commit to everything in the competition,” she continued detailing the secrets behind her Olympic Qualifier win. “I just imagine that I’m still in the practice and I’m just having heaps of fun because skating is fun.”

Trew, who had the better of Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Hiraki at every turn, credited the world number one for the way she continues to raise the bar of competition.

“It’s really good having skaters like Kokona and all the other girls in the heat just pushing each other because it just tries to make everyone land their runs and get more competition, but in a really good environment because we’re all friends and it’s heaps of fun.”

Placing third was Hiraki’s Japanese compatriot and the reigning Olympic champion Yosozumi Sakura, who only managed to finish one of the three runs (87.02).

Yosozumi, who has struggled with injury throughout the qualification process for Paris, was delighted with her result:

"I’m so happy to stand on the podium after a while. I got injured one year ago but I am finally back here. I was seeing other skaters improving their skills when I couldn’t skate It was difficult. However, there are good things as well. I improved myself through physical training away from skating."

She continued: "The final run didn’t go well but now I know I can win if I make the run. That’s important."

The third rider from Japan in the final, 13-year-old Hasegawa Mizuho, who was tops in the semi-finals, finished in fifth (86.20).
