After starting the paperwork process a few months ago, basketball star Joel Embiid has officially obtained French nationality after his citizenship was validated by the Official Gazette of the French Republic on 5 July.

That means that now the Philadelphia 76ers centre could be eligible for international competitions with France.

If EuroBasket is too close (from 1-18 September), the Cameroon native could join the vice Olympic champions for the 2023 FIBA World Cup in over a year, but also for the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

At Tokyo 2020, France was defeated in the final by 16-time Olympic gold medallists USA (87-82).

Embiid represents a strong addition to a team already featuring NBA players Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier.
