National Open Athletics Championships 2022: Rosy Meena Paulraj wins pole vault gold medal with new national record

Rosy Meena Paulraj rewrote her own national record by clearing 4.21m in the women’s pole vault to win the gold medal.

Indian pole vaulter Rosy Meena Paulraj set a new national record in the women’s pole vault after clearing 4.21m to win the gold medal at the National Open Athletics Championships 2022 in Bengaluru on Saturday.

She eclipsed her own previous record of 4.20m set at the National Games 2022 last week. Rosy Meena Paulraj’s effort was also a new meet record, rewriting the previous one of 4.15m by VS Surekha.

The Tamil Nadu athlete was joined on the podium by Pavithra Venkatesh, who won silver and bronze-medallist Baranica Elangovan - both of whom represent Railways.

Suraj Panwar and Ravina won the men’s and women’s 20km race walk respectively.

Ravina set a new meet record of 1:34:55, breaking the previous one by Olympian Bhawana Jat by almost four minutes. Bhawana Jat could only come home in fourth place in the day’s race.

Railways’ Paramjot Kaur won the women’s discus throw with a best effort of 50.81m.

Star sprinter Hima Das made it through to the women’s 100m final while Olympian Tajinder Pal Singh Toor also qualified for the men’s shot put final.
