India’s top track and field athletes competed at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2023 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar from June 15 to 19.

The 62nd edition of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships was also the final chance for Indian athletes to secure their spots for the Asian Games 2023, scheduled in Hangzhou, the People's Republic of China from September 23 to October 8.

Apart from the Asian Games, Murali Sreeshankar and Tajinderpal Singh Toor also made the cut for the world athletics championships to be held in Budapest in August, and the Asian athletics championships in Pattaya, next month.

Except for javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and steeplechaser Avinash Sable, other athletes looking to make the Indian squad for the Asian Games were mandated to compete at the inter-state championships by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

The AFI granted Neeraj Chopra and Avinash Sable exemptions based on their recent successes in big-ticket events. Both had already breached the Asian Games qualifying standards set by the AFI.
