From rising stars to international medallists, the five-day National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2023, starting Thursday, will see some of India’s top track and field athletes in action at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The 62nd edition of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships will serve as the final selection trials for the Asian Games 2023, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, the People's Republic of China from September 23 to October 8.
Except for Neeraj Chopra and Avinash Sable, who have already qualified for the Hangzhou Games, most of the other top Indian athletes will be in action at Bhubaneswar.
A majority of them will be looking to breach the Asian Games qualifying standards set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). For a few who have already breached the mark, the meet will be a good opportunity to fine tune their preparations for the Hangzhou Games.
The men’s long jump event in Bhubaneswar will see Murali Sreeshankar, a Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medallist, battle national record holder Jeswin Aldrin for the top spot.
Both have been in impressive form this 2023 athletics season. While world No. 8 Murali Sreeshankar clinched third place in Paris Diamond League earlier this month, Jeswin Aldrin’s 8.42m effort in March is the second world-leading effort behind Germany's three-time Paralympic long jump gold medallist Markus Rehm’s 8.50m in June.
The men’s triple jump event features a stacked field with Commonwealth Games medallists Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker in fray. The duo will be challenged by India’s national record holder Praveen Chithravel.
Commonwealth Games 2022 men’s high jump bronze medallist and national record holder Tejaswin Shankar will compete in the decathlon.
In the absence of Neeraj Chopra, young javelin throwers Rohit Yadav, Vikrant Malik and DP Manu - all part of the 80m club - will vie for the title.
National record holders Tajinderpal Singh Toor (men’s shot put), Amiya Kumar Mallick (men’s 100m), Amlan Borgohain (men’s 200m) and Jinson Johnson (men’s 1500m) will also look to dominate their respective events.
Hima Das will not compete in the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2023 but there will be plenty of upcoming youngsters in action.
The women’s 400m race will see 16-year-old Rezoana Mallick Heena, the U20 Asian champion, challenge the likes of World U20 championships medallists Rupal Chaudhary and Priya Mohan. Two-time senior Asian championships silver medallist Jisna Mathew is also in the mix.
The 19-year-old Shaili Singh, who won the women’s long jump silver at the 2021 world U20 championships, will face competition from 2022 national champion Ancy Sojan and Asian championships bronze medallist Nayana James.
Jyothi Yarraji is expected to be the front-runner in her pet 100m hurdles event. She is also competing in the 100m sprint event alongside Asian championships bronze medallist Srabani Nanda.
Women’s 1500m national record holder and 2021 national champion Harmilan Bains is slated to run in both 800m and 1500m races. The middle distance runner has already breached the Asian Games mark for the 1500m in Chennai back in March.
The Bhubaneswar meet will also see the 2014 Asian Games discus throw champion Seema Punia return for her first competition of the year. Javelin thrower Annu Rani, an Asian Games bronze medallist, and former Asian shot put champion Manpreet Kaur are also slated to compete.
In the women’s 20km race walk, CWG silver medallist Priyanka Goswami and two-time national champion and Olympian Bhawna Jat will be the top names to watch out for.
The National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2023 will conclude on June 19.
