The reigning world badminton champion needed 40 minutes on Thursday (14 July) to oust Indonesia's Tommy Sugarto 21-13,21-17 and reach the quarter-finals.
The 25-year-old is hoping to become the first Singaporean men's singles Open champion since 1962.

Indonesia's number four seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting also advanced by beating Chun-Yi Lin 21-12,19-21,21-16 to set up a quarter-final against Malaysia's Ng Tze Yong, who took care of Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-15,21-13.
India's Thomas Cup hero HS Prannoy managed a surprising 21-14, 20-22, 21-18 comeback win over world No. 4 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. Next up for him is Japan's unseeded Naraoka Kodai who saw off Indonesia's Jonatan Christie 7-21, 21-18, 21-15.
In the women's competition, PV Sindhu had to work hard to defeat world No. 59 Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam 19-21, 21-19, 21-18 in one hour and six minutes.
The two-time Olympic medallist, who is seeded third at the Singapore Open, will be challenged by Han Yue (China) in the next round.
Thailand's number six seed Pornpawee Chochuwong is the only other seeded player left in the women's singles draw after her hard-fought 16-21, 21-15, 21-11 win over Yeo Jia Min.
