Lee Zii Jia has suffered another early exit from a badminton World Tour tournament after falling in three games to Ng Ka Long Angus at the 2023 Indonesia Masters on Thursday (26 January).
The Malaysian did not seem at his best as he allowed Hong Kong China's Ng to hit the front in all three games. While Lee managed to claw back to win the opener, and forced the second game beyond 21 points, Ng turned it on in the third.
From 12-12 in the deciding game, Lee could only win one of the next 10 points as Ng completed a 16-21, 22-20, 21-13 victory that sends the second seed out of the competition.
Lee has now not made it past the round of 16 at each of his last five tournaments.
Following Viktor Axelsen's withdrawal before the tournament and Loh Kean Yew's elimination earlier in the day, the hosts' fourth-seeded Jonatan Christie is now the top seed left in the competition.
In the women's draw, Spain's Carolina Marín continued her recent strong form by reaching the quarter-finals, seeing off Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-19, 21-13.
The Rio 2016 Olympic champion next faces Denmark's Line Christophersen in an all-European affair, as Marín looks to win her first title since clinching the 2022 European Championships crown last April.
