Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia beat unfancied Chinese Taipei athlete Lin Chun-yi in his first-round clash at badminton's 2023 Indonesia Masters in Jakarta on Wednesday (25 January).

The second seed – the top seed for the competition after first seed Viktor Axelsen withdrew ahead of the tournament – was a straight-games winner in the first career meeting between him and Lin. 21-18, 21-17 was the score.

Lee progresses to face Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong China in the second round of the men's singles.

Earlier, third seed Loh Kean Yew of Singapore made it through to the second round with a straight-games victory over PR China's Li Shifeng 21-14, 21-16.

Loh, the world number eight but seeded third as the draw was made using an older set of world rankings, progresses to Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia in the last 16.

Anthony Ginting and Jonatan Christie were other notable men's first round winners in men's singles.

Also through to the second round is women's singles seventh seed, and Rio 2016 Olympic champion, Carolina Marin.

Marin continued her strong comeback from her most recent injury setback with a 21-10, 21-10 straight-games win over Chinese Taipei's Hsu Wen-chi and will face Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan next.

Earlier in the day, Japan's Momota Kento was eliminated by Shi Yuqi, while his compatriot and women's top seed Yamaguchi Akane withdrew from the tournament resulting in a walkover for Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong.
