Loh Kean Yew was knocked out of badminton's Indonesia Masters in the second round on Thursday (26 January), losing 21-18, 21-15 to Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo.
Loh, appearing in his third tournament in as many weeks, was not his usual self against the Jakarta crowd favourite who beat the third-seeded Singaporean for the first time in five career meetings.
While the first game was fairly close, Dwi Wardoyo led from start to finish in the second. Loh saved six match points from 20-9 to save face, but Dwi Wardoyo got to him in the end.
Dwi Wardoyo's compatriot Jonatan Christie will join him in the quarter-finals after a 21-16, 21-15 win over fellow Indonesian Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.
Christie, the fourth seed here, will face Lakshya Sen in the next round. Sen needed to go the distance in knocking out Ng Tze Yong 19-21, 21-8, 21-17.
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting wasn't as fortunate, going down in two games to the tournament's former champion Shi Yu Qi (21-19, 21-16).
Shi, who eliminated Momota Kento a day earlier in the opening round, seized a closely contested first set before sucking the life out of the arena by capitalising on his second match point. Shi is now 7-1 lifetime versus Ginting.
In the women's singles, last week's India Open champion An Se Young had to dig deep to beat 18-21, 21-7, 21-10 Putri Kusuma Wardani.
