The likes of Lionel Messi, Novak Djokovic, Simone Biles, and Mikaela Shiffrin will all be up for awards at the 2024 Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, Spain, in April.
They are among the many Olympic champions, medallists, and superstars announced as nominees in eight different awards categories on Monday (26 February).
In the seven main award categories, the nominees were selected by over 1,300 members of Laureus' global media panel, while the International Paralympic Committee also voted on the final nominees for the World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award.
Messi, the 2023 winner of World Sportsman of the Year, is again on the shortlist for that award, joined by Djokovic for his three tennis Grand Slam titles in 2023. Pole vault world record holder Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis and World Athletics Championships triple gold medallist Noah Lyles also make the cut.
Shiffrin, who broke the Alpine Skiing World Cup record for race victories in 2023, is joined on the World Sportswoman of the Year shortlist by three track athletes – Shericka Jackson, Faith Kipyegon, and Sha'Carri Richardson, as well as football World Cup winner Aitana Bonmatí and French Open tennis champion Iga Swiatek.
Biles leads the nominations in the World Comeback of the Year category for her four World Championships gold medals after a two-year absence from artistic gymnastics.
Other Olympians nominated include Chinese swimmer Qin Haiyang and British runner Josh Kerr, both in the World Breakthrough of the Year category, while the World Action Sportsperson of the Year category is dominated by Olympic stars including Rayssa Leal and Bethany Shriever.
The award winners will be announced at a ceremony in Madrid, Spain, on Monday 22 April 2024.
