India’s star sprinter Hima Das clinched the gold medal in the women’s 200m event at the Indian Grand Prix I 2023 athletics meet in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Sunday but fell agonisingly short of breaching the qualifying standards for the Asian Games 2023.

Long jumper Ancy Sojan, however, ensured she topped the podium and qualified for the upcoming continental championships, scheduled to start in Hangzhou, China in September.

Hima Das registered a time of 23.79 seconds - 0.36s short of Asian Games qualification standard for the women’s 200m sprint event set by Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Ancy Sojan from Kerala produced a series of leaps beyond 6m and won the women’s long jump gold medal with a best effort of 6.49m. In the process, she breached the Asian Games qualifying standard of 6.45m.

In the men's 800m race, Haryana's Krishan Kumar topped the podium with a time of 1:47.26, his second best time over the distance. The Army man beat the Asian Games qualifying standard of 1:49.05.

The men's 5,000m race saw three Uttar Pradesh runners come home inside the Asian Games qualifying mark of 14:00.00.

Abhishek Pal logged in 13:51.14 to emerge victorious. He was 2.15 seconds slower than his personal best. Gulveer Singh, meanwhile, clocked a personal best time of 13:51.88, improving on the earlier time of 14:02.50 and Mohammed Nur Hasan marked a time of 13:52.26 on his 5,000m debut.

In men’s javelin throw, Odisha’s Kishore Kumar produced only two valid tries but his effort of 81.05m, a new personal best improving on the 78.93m set in Bellary last month, proved enough for the gold. Manu DP had two throws over 80m, but finished second. Both went past the Asian Games qualifying mark set by AFI.

The first Grand Prix featured a total of 18 events - 10 for men and eight for women.

The Indian Grand Prix 2 will be held on March 27 in Thiruvananthapuram while the third and fourth legs will take place on April 2 and April 10, respectively, in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
