Anirban Lahiri enjoys solid finish at Safeway Open golf

Veteran Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri shot a two-under 70 in the final round to finish a creditable tied-36th in just his second event on the PGA Tour since March this year at the Safeway Open Championship on Sunday.

Lahiri had made the cut with a bogey-free seven-under 65 in the second round, his best round in almost six years. He had followed it up with another bogey-free five-under in the third round, which included an eagle on the 18th hole.

The Indian golfer had been on a terrific streak of 45 holes without a bogey. However, that ended early on Sunday.

After starting with four straight pars, Lahiri took five shots to get to the green and then two-putted for a double-bogey on the par-5 fifth. He regained some ground with a birdie on the very next hole and ended the front nine one-over.

Lahiri then carded birdies on the 12th and 14th holes but a bogey on the par-3 15th left him even-par for the round and in danger of dropping down the leaderboard.

However, three birdies on the final four holes meant that the Indian golfer finished with a flourish, giving him an overall score of 12-under.

Cink ends title drought

Experienced American golfer Stewart Cink, caddied by his son Reagan, shot a seven-under 65 in the final round to take the Safeway Open title two shots ahead of younger compatriot Harry Higgs.

It was the 47-year-old’s first title since the British Open in 2009, and it made Cink the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson at Pebble Beach last year.

Cink’s eight birdies were enough to upstage Higgs, who was gunning for the win with an eagle on the par-5 16th but the latter’s two bogies earlier in the round let him down in the end.

Mickelson meanwhile warmed up for the US Open with a 10-under to end tied-44th. It is the only major missing from the 50-year-old’s cabinet, and he will aim to end that run later this week.
