Anirban Lahiri through to the weekend at Safeway Open golf
Lahiri recovered from a poor opening round to make the cut in just his second event on the PGA Tour since March.
Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri enjoyed a bogey-free round to sit tied-54th after two rounds and make the cut at the PGA Tour’s Safeway Championship on Friday.
Lahiri, who was playing in only his second event after the Wyndham Championship last month, had a rusty opening round – carding two bogies and a double-bogey to end with two-over 74 on Thursday.
However, the Indian golfer enjoyed a stellar second round at the Silverado Resort and Spa in California, USA.
Lahiri began the day with a birdie on the 436-yard par-4 first and then sunk consecutive birdies on the fourth and fifth holes.
The Rio 2016 Olympian was clearly in his elements, and his special focus on the short game paid off well as Lahiri hit two more birdies on the par-4 eighth and par-5 ninth to end the front nine a superb five-under.
The second part of the course proved to be a little tougher. Lahiri carded birdies on the 11th and 16th and made pars on the rest of the holes to finish the round with a seven-under 65.
The two-time European Tour winner’s overall score of five-under 139 meant that he had to endure a few anxious hours of waiting to see if his effort was good enough to play over the weekend.
The cut eventually fell at exactly five-under, which meant that Lahiri went through with 20 other golfers as the last group at tied-54th.
Burns leads the way
American golfer Sam Burns enjoyed an outright two-shot lead over countryman Harry Higgs going into the weekend at the Safeway Open.
Burns, who had shot eight-under 64 on the opening day, began the second round on the back nine and carded a double-bogey on the par-3 11th.
However, it proved to be the only blip of the day for Burns as he carded three birdies in the next three holes and hit a further six over the course of the round to finish the round with a seven-under 65, giving him an overall score of 15-under 129.
Meanwhile, the legendary Phil Mickelson also made the cut at the Safeway Open by one shot, ending the with an overall score of six-under 138 to sit tied-34th going into Saturday.
