Golfer Anirban Lahiri turns to yoga to stay on course
The Indian golfer also welcomed the appointment of Trevor Immelman as the captain of the International Team for the 2021 Presidents Cup.
Like his contemporaries, Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri has been unable to hit the fairways during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead, the Pune-born Florida native is swapping the tee box for a yoga mat.
“It's nice to see my body responding to it (yoga),” Anirban Lahiri told the Press Trust of India. “I've not been disciplined with yoga over the last few years as golf has basically taken up all my time.
"I'm lucky I'm still flexible and I'll be turning 33 in a few months' time. If I devote the right amount of time and attention to it, I can see my body responding well and it helps with focus and balance.
"I'm pushing myself a bit more, which is a good challenge. It's nice reconnecting with my body," the Olympian added.
The Indian golfer is currently with his wife, daughter and parents in Hyderabad after the Hero Indian Open - which he was set to be a part of - was postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak and all flights back to his base in Florida were cancelled.
Lahiri lauds Immelman as captain for Presidents Cup
Part of the PGA Tour – the world's biggest and strongest professional golf circuit – Anirban Lahiri needs to be in top shape in his bid for a spot in the International Team for next year's Presidents Cup.
The former Asian Tour no. 1 is hoping to take part in the 2021 Presidents Cup and hailed the appointment of South African Trevor Immelman as captain of the International Team last Tuesday.
"Trevor is a great choice for our next captain. I interacted with him a lot at Liberty National in 2017,” Anirban Lahiri said.
“He's captained the Junior Presidents Cup as well and has been a valuable asset as a captain's assistant to Ernie (Els). I wish him the best of luck and I hope to be on his team and bring some points to the team,” he added.
The 2021 Presidents Cup is scheduled to take place at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
It will be the third time after 2015 and 2017 that Anirban Lahiri will be a part of the International Team should he be named in the squad.
Lahiri represented India as golf made a return to the Olympics at Rio 2016, playing in the men's competition alongside compatriot Shiv Chawrasia.
