Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, Commonwealth Games 2022 champion Lakshya Sen and Ashmita Chaliha sealed their spots in the Indian badminton team for Asian Games 2023 after the four-day selection trials at the Jwala Gutta Academy of Excellence in Hyderabad.
The Indian badminton team for the 2023 Asian Games will comprise 19 players - 10 men and nine women. Tanisha Crasto will be appearing both in women’s and mixed doubles.
PV Sindhu (women’s singles), HS Prannoy (men’s singles), Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (men’s doubles) and Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly (women’s doubles) were handed automatic spots in the Indian badminton team based on their world rankings.
The remaining players were selected through the trials in Hyderabad.
According to the selection trials format announced by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), three spots in each men’s and women’s singles, one spot each in men’s and women’s doubles and two spots in mixed doubles were up for grabs.
The top-ranked singles players from the trials also got an opportunity to compete in the individual events, which will be played after the team championships at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Kidambi Srikanth and Ashmita Chaliha won all three of their matches to top the men’s and women’s singles competitions, respectively, and assured themselves of a berth in the individual events as well.
Lakshya Sen and national champion Mithun Manjunath will complete the men’s singles line-up in the team championship while Anupama Upadhyaya and Malvika Bansod will be the other singles players in the women’s team event.
The men’s doubles category was tightly contested as world No. 23 Dhruv Kapila/MR Arjun, Krishna Prasad G/Vishnuvardhan Goud P and the new pairing of Suraj Goala and Pruthvi Roy K finished with two wins each. Kapila and Arjun made the final squad based on a better game difference.
Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto will be the second women’s doubles combination at the Hangzhou meet after Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly.
Crasto will also be playing the mixed doubles events alongside Sai Pratheek K. Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy will be the second mixed doubles entry for India.
