This weekend Mikaela Shiffrin is set to rejoin the Alpine skiing FIS World Cup in Åre, Sweden on 9-10 March.
The American has not competed since the 26 of January, when she crashed into the safety netting during her downhill run in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, suffering a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee.
In Sweden, the World Cup programme features a giant slalom on Saturday, followed by a slalom on Sunday, with Shiffrin expected to compete at least in the latter.
“Mikaela is improving in slalom and feels that the slalom race is still realistic, but the GS (giant slalom) is in question,” Shiffrin’s team said in a statement Monday according to AP. “We will share more in the coming days.”
Shiffrin took her career World Cup total to 95 wins in Jasna earlier this year. In Are she claimed her first-ever World Cup victory back in 2012 and in the same venue last season she broke Ingemark Stenmark's World Cup record.
The five-time overall World Cup champion has dropped to third place in the race for the overall Crystal Globe due to her six-week absence. With 1,209 points, she trails Federica Brignone (1,268) and leader Lara Gut-Behrami (1,594).
