The new Alpine skiing FIS World Cup season begins this weekend in Sölden, Austria, and Mikaela Shiffrin is set to be in action on Saturday (26 October) as the season commences with a giant slalom race.
Shiffrin enters the season chasing her next milestone, 100 World Cup victories. The 29-year-old currently sits on 97, having won the slalom at last season's World Cup Final to take her one closer to the century mark.
After an injury-hit 2023/24, which saw the American sidelined for nearly two months following a crash suffered in Cortina d'Ampezzo on 26 January and resulted in her missing out on the overall Crystal Globe, Shiffrin is back to attempt to regain her crown.
This year, the Colorado native is also aiming to win a record-breaking ninth slalom globe. If she manages to do so, she will be the single skier to have won a discipline globe the most times. Her eight slalom globes currently tie her with Lindsey Vonn (downhill) and Ingemar Stenmark (slalom, giant slalom).
On the Rattenbach, the double Olympic champion raced nine times, winning in 2014 and 2021: "Tis year I've had a pretty significant amount of really solid training in slalom, GS, and Super-G, and that has been been great. I'm feeling just physically in a pretty good place and mentally as well," she told reporters ahead of her season debut.
