Gangwon 2024: Winter Youth Olympic Games shifts into figure skating mode

YOG skaters including medal favourites Shimada Mao, Nakata Rio and Kim Hyungyeom warm up Gangneung Ice Arena two nights before competition kicks off.

The curtains went up on figure skating at Gangwon 2024 as Winter Youth Olympians took to the ice for the first time on Thursday (24 January).

Figure skaters baptised the Gangneung Ice Arena for the competition starting on Saturday through 1 February with the likes of Junior Grand Prix Final champions Shimada Mao and Nakata Rio from Japan going through their motions.

From the hosts Republic of Korea, men’s contender Kim Hyungyeom got his work in although Shin Jia and Kim Yuseong on the women’s side were a no-show.

Friday invites official practise when skaters fine-tune to their music on the eve of the men’s and pairs short programmes.

Thirty-four women and men each from 25 countries are entered for the figure skating event here in Gangwon.
