The 2023 WNBA season was memorable for women's basketball superstar Diana Taurasi achieving new career milestones.
Whlie she didn't win a fourth WNBA championship title with the Phoenix Mercury, the franchise she has played for since they drafted her as the No.1 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft, Taurasi also had her sights set on something else: the 10,000 career-point mark.
Having become the WNBA’s all-time leading points scorer in 2017, the Mercury guard breached the 9,000 mark back in 2021, less than a month before winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021.
Taurasi began the 2023 season on 9,693 points, just 307 points away from hitting 10,000, and quickly made her mark.
Taurasi made history on 3 August 2023 when she became the first WNBA player to score 10,000 career points, when she scored 42 points against the Atlanta Dream to reach the milestone. She ended the 2023 regular season with a total of 10,108 points, while the Mercury missed out on the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
Taurasi, a five-time Olympic gold medallist with Team USA, is already considered one of the best to have ever played basketball. As part of the WNBA’s celebration of its 25th season, fans voted her the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time).
The award not only gestured to the role the American has played over the years securing multiple WNBA and Olympic titles but also her individual talent. In addition to the points record, Taurasi is also the league’s career leader in field goals and three-point field goals.
