Former Asian champion Jhilli Dalabehera will lead a 20-member Indian contingent at the senior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023 which begins at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida, India from Wednesday.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships are organised by Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation in non-Commonwealth Games years. The last edition, which was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2021, was held concurrently with the World Weightlifting Championships.
At the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, Indian weightlifters will also compete in the junior and youth weightlifting events.
Jhilli Dalabehera, who won the gold medal at the 2019 championships, will compete in 49kg category where Mirabai Chanu is absent. Dalabehera will be joined by the 2022 Junior World Weightlifting Championships silver medallist Gyaneshwari Yadav in the 49kg category.
N Ajith, listed in men’s 73kg, is the only Asian Games-bound Indian weightlifter at the Commonwealth Championships. Mirabai Chanu, Achinta Sheuli and Bindyarani Devi, who make up the rest of the Indian weightlifting team for the Asian Games 2023, have opted out.
Two-time defending champion Ajay Singh will eye a hat-trick in the men’s 81kg. Purnima Pandey, competing in women’s +87kg, will be another Indian weightlifter looking to defend her title in Greater Noida.
Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medallist Lovepreet Singh, Commonwealth Championships 2021 silver medallists Popy Hazarika and Harjinder Kaur will also compete.
India won 16 medals at the last edition of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships - the highest among all nations. However, Canada topped the overall medals tally, winning five gold medals compared to India’s four.
Over 250 weightlifters from 20 countries will vie for medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023. The competitions will conclude on July 16.
