Indian swimmers Advait Page and Kushagra Rawat finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the men’s 1500m freestyle finals at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Advait Page, who set the Indian 1500m freestyle swimming national record of 15:23.66s at the Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions in 2021, clocked 15:32.36s at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Page’s compatriot Kushagra Rawat, meanwhile, managed to finish the course in 15:42.67s to finish last in the eight-man final.

Australia’s Sam Short, who led the heats, won the gold medal with a timing of 14:48.54s. Northern Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen (14:51.79s) won the silver while English swimmer Luke Thomas Turley (15:12.78s) took the bronze in front of his home crowd.

On Tuesday, Advait Page and Kushagra Rawat qualified for the 1500m freestyle final after finishing seventh and eighth, respectively, in the heats.

Advait Page timed 15:39.25s in heat 1 while Rawat clocked 15:47.77s in the second heat. The top eight from both the heats qualified for the final.

The conclusion of the men’s 1500m freestyle event brings an end to India’s swimming campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

India sent a four-man swimming contingent to Birmingham, with Advait Page, Kushagra Rawat, Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj competing across nine different events.

Srihari Nataraj made history by becoming the first Indian swimmer to qualify for multiple finals at a single CWG edition. He finished fifth in the 50m backstroke - India’s best-ever finish in swimming at the Commonwealth Games - and came in seventh in the 100m backstroke.

Tokyo Olympian Srihari Nataraj also broke the national record in the men’s 200m backstroke heats but failed to make the final.
