With more than 150 athletes in the fray in 15 different sports, India will be eyeing a big medal haul at the Commonwealth Games 2022, which gets underway with the opening ceremony on July 28.

India have been a force to reckon with at the Commonwealth Games since the turn of the millennium.

They have won at least 50 medals in each edition since 2002, with their highest haul coming at the 2010 edition in New Delhi, where India won 101 medals. Moreover, India have finished in the top five of the medal tally in each edition since 2002.

At Birmingham 2022, India are well-placed to continue that momentum.

Olympic medallists PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia and the Indian men’s hockey team are some of the big names in contention.

The Indian women’s hockey team, former CWG gold-medallists, are also expected to put up a tough fight as are the Indian women’s cricket team, who will be making its CWG debut as the sport returns for the first time since 1998.

Manika Batra will be out to defend her singles gold in table tennis while veteran Sharath Kamal, who medalled in every event he played in last time out, will look to emulate that feat.

Olympic gold-medallist Neeraj Chopra will be a big miss for India as the defending champion pulled out due to injury.
