The men’s pairs and women’s fours teams of the Indian lawn bowls contingent notched wins on the opening day of competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK on Friday.

The men’s pairs duo of Sunil Bahadur and Dinesh Kumar lost their first match of the day 14-17 to Malaysia but recovered in resounding fashion to beat the Falkland Islands 36-4 in their second match of section C. They are currently top of their section.

In all lawn bowls categories at Birmingham 2022, a win gives the athlete/team three points. There are four sections in each category and the top two in each section progress to the quarter-finals.

Similarly, the women’s fours team of Lovely Choubey, Rupa Tirkey, Pinki and Nayanmoni Saikia lost their first match 18-9 to England but then beat the Cook Islands 15-9 in their second match. They are placed third in section D.

The trio of Chandan Kumar Singh, Navneet Singh and Mridul Borgohain lost 23-6 to New Zealand and 19-12 to Scotland to sit bottom of section A in the men’s triples.

In the women’s singles, Tania Choudhary lost 21-10 to Scotland’s Dee Hoggan and then, after a tough fight, fell 21-20 to Daphne Arthur-Almond of the Falkland Islands in her second match. She currently sits at the bottom of section B.

The sectional play will continue in lawn bowls at CWG 2022 on Saturday.
