Ten lawn bowlers, including veterans Sunil Bahadur, Dinesh Kumar and Tania Choudhury, will be gunning for India's maiden Commonwealth Games lawn bowls medal at the Birmingham 2022, which starts on Thursday.

All lawn bowling events at Commonwealth Games 2022 will be held at the historic Victoria Park in the picturesque town of Royal Leamington Spa near Warwickshire. Watch live streaming.

Lawn bowls, often referred to as just bowls, has been a fixture at every Commonwealth Games barring the 1966 edition in Jamaica. England are the most decorated lawn bowling country in the history of the CWG with 51 medals, 20 gold, nine silvers and 22 bronze, followed by Australia with 50, 14 golds, 23 silvers and 13 bronze.

Scotland, meanwhile, boasts 20 gold, 10 silver and nine bronze and are tied with neighbours England for most gold medals won in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games.

Though lawn bowls has been a part of the CWG since 1930, then known as the British Empire Games, Indian participation only began in 2010.

India are yet to win a lawn bowls medal at the CWG but have come close on two occasions.

At New Delhi 2010, the Indian women’s triples team of Tania Choudhury, Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki topped their section ahead of powerhouses Australia and Scotland but fell in the semi-finals to the Aussies.

The Indian women narrowly lost their bronze medal match to England to finish fourth.

Four years later at Glasgow 2014, the Indian men’s four team, comprising Kamal Kumar Sharma, Chandan Kumar Singh, Samit Malhorta and Dinesh Kumar, also made the semis but finished outside the medal positions yet again after losing by a single point to Australia in the bronze playoffs.

Three Indian teams made the quarter-finals in different events at Gold Coast 2018 but none managed to get into the semis.

India have named an experienced 10-member team for the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham with multiple members of the squad having competed in multiple CWGs.

Rules of lawn bowls and format for Commonwealth Games 2022

Lawn bowls involve rolling a bowl down the green (stretch) with the aim to get it as close as possible towards ‘the jack’ - which is the designated target. Getting one’s bowls closer to the jack than the opponent/opposition team wins more points.

There are four formats in lawn bowling, singles, pairs, triples and fours, named according to the number of players in each team. There are separate men’s and women’s medal events for each.

In singles matches, the first to 21 points wins the tie. In all the other formats, bowls are rolled down from 18 different ends and the team with more points after both teams have taken their turns win.

The lawn bowls tournament format for Birmingham Games 2022 is also relatively simple. Athletes (in singles) and teams (in other categories) are divided into four sections where they play each other in a single match.

The top two athletes/teams from each section move onto the quarter-finals.
