Commonwealth Games 2022 artistic gymnastics: Yogeshwar Singh qualifies for all-around final
The trio of Yogeshwar Singh, Saif Tamboli and Satyajit Mondal finished eighth in the team event. The all-around final is on Sunday.
India’s Yogeshwar Singh qualified for the all-around final after he finished 18th in the event on Friday at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK.
The Indian men’s artistic gymnasts trio of Saif Tamboli, Satyajit Mondal and Yogeshwar Singh, however, bowed out of the men’s team events.
The 24-year-old Yogeshwar Singh was the only gymnast to perform on every apparatus at the Arena Birmingham. He scored 11.300 in the floor exercise, 11.200 on the pommel horse, 11.950 on the rings, 13.000 on the vault, 13.450 on the parallel bars and 12.700 on the horizontal bar.
Yogeshwar’s scores gave him an aggregate of 73.600, which placed him 18th in the all-around standings, taking him through to the final. The top-18 in the all-around make it to the medal round.
“The crowd have been amazing,” Yogeshwar Singh said. “We have been training so hard and even though I was the only one competing in the all-around, my two team-mates did so well.
“I just hope to perform better every time,” Yogeshwar continued. “We have been working on our individual scores and the execution of techniques: that has been our repeated focus.
“It's great to work with my team-mates, it's really useful for me and we help each other to do better,” the Indian added.
This is the second straight Commonwealth Games where Yogeshwar Singh made the all-around final. He finished 14th in the final in the previous edition at Gold Coast 2018 in Australia.
James Hall of England, silver medallist at the 2018 CWG, led the aggregate all-around scores with 82.550. Marios Georgiou of Cyprus, bronze medallist in Australia, was third with 81.900.
The Birmingham 2022 men's all-around final will be held on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Satyajit Mondal scored 7.850 in the floor exercise and 13.400 on the vault, which put him outside the top eight in both apparatus standings.
Former national champion Saif Tamboli only competed in the parallel bars and scored 14.050.
The trio’s individual scores added up to 108.900, which placed them eighth in the men’s team event.
The women - including Olympian Pranati Nayak - will be in action on Saturday in artistic gymnastics at CWG 2022.
