CHAN 2022: Results, tables and standings at the African Nations Championship

The biennial African Nations Championship is underway in Algeria with the group stages now ended. Olympics.com looks at the current state of affairs in the competition, which runs from 13 January to 4 February 2023.

Football’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) is up and underway in Algeria. The competition was originally set to take place in 2022 before being moved to 13 January to 4 February of this year.

The championship acts as a barometer for home-grown African talent, with only players who ply their trade on the continent eligible to compete in the tournament. It leaves the door open for some lesser-known players to capture the attention of the world as stars from the domestic leagues of the nations involved are given an excellent platform to showcase their skills.

The 2022 edition (in 2023) saw teams compete in five groups for the initial stage of action, with two groups of four teams and three of three. The late withdrawal of champions Morocco meant Group C included only three teams compared to the original four.

Quarterfinals began on 27 January with semifinals taking place on 31 January and the final on Saturday 4 February.
